Note – Understanding the Role: Sex Therapist vs. Psychologist
A common misconception is that you must hold a university degree in psychology to practice as a sex therapist or intimacy coach. In reality, unless you are marketing yourself specifically as a registered clinical psychologist, a formal university degree is not a legal prerequisite to work in this field.
While clinical psychologists diagnose and treat complex mental health disorders under strict medical regulations, a sex therapist frequently operates as a specialized relationship counselor, educator, or life coach. Their role is to provide practical guidance, communication strategies, and emotional support to individuals and couples navigating intimacy, self-esteem, and relationship challenges.
Because counseling and coaching are self-regulated industries in Australia, many successful practitioners enter the field through specialized professional development courses, building on their natural empathy, communication skills, and passion for helping others rebuild connection.
⚠️ Professional Practice Notice
Please Note: The Advanced Certificate of Psycho-Sexual Studies is a professional development course designed to provide theoretical knowledge regarding relationship dynamics and psychosexual concepts. Completing this introductory certificate does not grant clinical accreditation, professional registration, or a license to practice as a certified or clinical psychologist in Australia. Students wishing to practice as certified psychologists should consult industry peaks bodies (such as the Counselling Federation of Australia – PACFA, or the Australian Counselling Association – ACA) to determine the university-level postgraduate qualifications required for clinical registration.
The Main Psychology Associations (The “Peak Bodies”)
These are voluntary, non-government professional organizations that represent psychologists, handle advocacy, and provide professional development.
- Australian Psychological Society (APS): This is the largest and oldest peak professional body for psychologists in Australia. They manage several specialized “colleges” (such as Clinical, Forensic, and Organisational psychology).
- Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPi): A major, rapidly growing alternative national peak body. The AAPi advocates strongly for a “unified voice” for all registered psychologists, fighting heavily for equal Medicare rebates across different registration pathways.
- Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA): A national body specifically dedicated to representing clinical psychologists who hold accredited post-graduate degrees in the field.
Note – our courses do not lead to registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). You need practical training at university for this.
