IMPORTANT NOTE:

Unlike nursing or psychology, social work is traditionally a self-regulated profession in Australia, meaning it has not been governed nationally under a single health practitioner board like AHPRA.

South Australia is currently the only jurisdiction with legislated registration for social workers under the Social Workers Registration Act. In SA, the title “Social Worker” is legally protected. To practice there, you must be formally registered, which strictly requires an approved degree.

Other States and Territories (QLD, NSW, VIC, WA, TAS, NT, ACT) do not currently have statutory, legislated title protection. Technically, an employer in these states could legally hire someone without a degree to do community support tasks, but in practice, they don’t hire them under the banner of “social worker.

Accepted Formal Educational Pathways

Our courses are theory only – to be fully qualified you need practical experience at university. To work as a fully qualified social worker, the AASW recognizes only two direct entry-point qualifications at the higher education level:

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW): A 4-year undergraduate degree containing a mandatory 1,000 hours of supervised field placement.

Master of Social Work (Qualifying): A 2-year postgraduate degree designed for individuals who already hold a prior undergraduate degree in a related field (such as social sciences, psychology, or human services).
